HOMEMADE SOURDOUGH TORTILLAS
This year my mission has been to make more foods from scratch, and of course that typically consists of using my sourdough starter! My husband is Hispanic, so naturally we buy a good amount of tortillas for our home. But not anymore! I’ve created this delicious, flaky, homemade sourdough tortilla recipe that even he approves of.
These Sourdough Tortillas are delicious served warm or reheated! This recipe makes roughly 6-8 tortillas made in an 8inch pan.
Homemade Tortilla Ingredients:
- 2.5 cups All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/4 cup Coconut Oil or Butter
- 1/2 cup Sourdough Starter
- 3/4 cup Hot Water
How to Make the Tortillas:
I promise this recipe is super easy! And it only took a couple minutes to prep the dough.
- Whisk the 2.5 cups all purpose flour and the salt together.
- Cut in roughly 1/4 cup of coconut oil so the flour gets a little clumpy. I used coconut oil at room temperature.
- Fold in either 1/2 cup active or discard sourdough starter.
- Add warm water, starting with 1/4 cup at a time. I added a total of roughly 3/4 cups.
- Let the dough sit covered for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Cut the dough into roughly 6-8 sections, depending on how large and how many tortillas you want.
- Roll out each section of your dough into circles.
- Place the flattened dough on a warm pan, using medium high heat. Keep the dough on the heat for roughly 90 seconds each side, until it starts to brown.
- Allow the tortillas to cool and then place in an airtight container to place in the fridge or the freezer.
How to serve these homemade tortillas:
Because this recipe uses coconut oil, it has a slightly sweet taste but that doesn’t mean that you still can’t made a delicious savory meal out of them. Here’s some of our favorite ways to eat these tortillas that include both savory and sweet.
- A typical taco style filled with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, and salsa
- Shrimp tacos – you especially get the coconut shrimp flavor with these tortillas – so delicious!
- Banana and hazelnut spread – need I say more?
- Also love a good strawberry and hazelnut spread or peanut butter spread
When you go to store these homemade tortillas (if you even have any left!) make sure to allow them to cool and then place in the fridge or freezer. You can easily pull them out and re-heat them whenever you need!
Try this recipe out and let me know how you and your family enjoy them!
